Key points from our full report on
premium and economy travel in February:
Business travel has been driving this seat class and the corporate sector is in good shape with plenty of cash and high profit levels;
World trade was expanding strongly and business confidence rose to near record levels in February, boosting business travel;
However, economy travel slowed more sharply from 4.9% to 3.3% in February;
Consumer confidence has slipped in China due to government policy and in parts of Europe due to financial crisis;
However, US consumer confidence has risen strongly since October;The 2% fall in the level of economy travel since October coincided with a 34% rise in the price of jet kerosene;
The impact this surge in fuel costs has had on travel costs is now damaging this price sensitive travel segment;
Since February oil prices have risen further, MENA unrest has continued and the Japanese earthquake has hit confidence and global supply chains;
However, most economists do not expect these events to stop the economic expansion worldwide;The next few months will show weaker travel but if the broader economy does continue to expand then growth in air travel should resume.
